Daily dose of recovery!

#0, by thwartnot, 11 June 2010 06:10 PM

Sponsorphip is perhaps the best tool I have to aid in my recovery. Keeping up my commitment to speak to my sponsor on a schedule is most helpful. Its like a daily reminder of my condition and a step in the right direction each day. Its a commitment i take seriously and a help to us both. It keeps lines of communication open in preparation for any potential hard times. its easy and can take on many forms. sometimes a text or even a simple missed call. done regularly it becomes a comfort zone. give it a trysmile

I am forever grateful to my sponsor who kept phoning for a whole year while I was still smoking dope to remind me of the 12 steps. Last fall, while I was still an addict, he again suggested this amazing AA-experience in Mexico where you do steps 4 & 5 for three days and nights in the countryside, with no sleep, minimal food and only candle light. I stayed with his family in Mexico who took very good care of me. Thanks to them, the program and the graciousness of God, I am clean today on my birthday almost 6 months later.
My sponsor never gave up on me, which is amazing. He keeps reminding me to come to our meetings, and keeps on phoning me. Sometimes he gets on my nerves, becouse he is so adamant about the program. He is my boss when it comes to staying clean. I can't stand having anyone else telling me what to do, whether it's my family or at my workplace. My sponsor is the only one who is permitted to give me lectures on my behaviour.
Although one is advised to find a sponsor of the same gender, I couldn't find a female who was kind enough and tough enough to put up with me. Therefore I asked this guy to be my sponsor. Bless him and bless all those who are suffering. You are not alone...

what a GREAT story and congratulations on your clean time.
the path looks so different for each of us but RECOVERY, like a beacon,
is waiting to light up our lives wherever, however, whenever we are ready.

on the issue of same gender sponsorship:
i know this is what's suggested but it's also very personal.
this suggestion was predicated in the olden days of AA and, in some ways,
does not reflect the state of the modern world.

it is TRUE that addicts often have huge boundary issues (though we do not
corner the market on that - "normies" are a mess with boundaries too!) and
it's important not to add any kind of sexual tension or ambiguity to the
sponsor-sponsee relationship.
however
i live in san francisco which is the happy home of many homosexual humans.
in this case, "same gender" sponsor can often mean we are being sponsored by
people who are potential sexual partners.

i am female and have two male sponsees as well as several female sponsees.
what is MOST important, i think, is finding someone who "has what we want" in
terms of a recovery that really works.

still amazed that years of sobriety are built one day at a time...

Lori B is you!   Born ina storm with a big mind.     I remember  you from several years ago when I attempted to do this mostly on my own & failed miserably.     This time I have a sponsor. This time I`m working the steps with my sponsor. A very wise man who once worked for Bill Graham.   I`m a harmonica man from No Ca land. An old dog finally learning old tricks.  How cool to see you here!       Thanks for this place Lou!               Larry B
